Key Stage 1 Activities

Minibeast Safari
(half day or full day)

Discover some of the natural habitats and explore the world of minibeasts found at Gatton Park. Either focus on one habitat for half a day and combine with another activity, or in Year 1 and Year 2 compare and contrast two habitats - ponds and woods - for a whole day.

The emphasis of the programme is on experiencing the environment in the woodland, the meadow and/or the pond and observing and recording the creatures that are found in these habitats. The children are shown how to collect the creatures carefully and safely using appropriate equipment. The children use a simple key to identify the creatures found. They would also be introduced to simple food chains.

Growing
(half day)

Your class can look at the plants of the beautiful gardens of Gatton Park, find out how they grow and what they require for life. Activities will include:

  • Squirrels and seeds – how plants and animals need each other
  • Parts of a plant – find the parts of a flowering plant and learn what each part does
  • Seed tig' – a run-around game to illustrate what seedlings need to grow
  • Flower identification

Why not combine 'Growing' with a 'Tree, Twigs and Tracks' or a 'Minibeast Hunt'?

Barnaby Frog's teamwork challenge
(half day)

Can your team complete the challenges that will help Barnaby change from a tadpole into a frog?

Each child receives a 'passport' and after every challenge they complete the next stage in Barnaby Frog's lifecycle. Reception children will be given stickers for each stage to put in their 'passport' while Year 1 and Year 2 will draw the stages of the lifecycle.

To complete the challenges the children work in pairs or a group, using co-ordination and cooperation between one another.

Can you safely lead your partner along a blindfold trail? Can your team help Barnaby to hop across the pond, using only the lily pads? Can you collect all the pieces to complete a jigsaw?

All of the children receive a certificate to congratulate them for helping Barnaby to become a frog.

  • a walk around the orchard looking for apple facts
  • describing apples and apple taste tests
  • planting apple pips
  • printing with apples

Sensory Walks
(half day)

Use all of your senses to experience Gatton Park. Explore how we use our senses to find out about the world around us and how to keep safe.

This is an ideal programme to combine with another half day activity, such as a minibeast hunt. The children will have the chance to take part in a walk with a series of activities that use props and innovative ideas to encourage the children to see the environment in a different way, for example:

  • Collecting nature's colours on an artist's palette.
  • Using a secrets box to collect different textures and then sharing them with another group.
  • Creating our own Smelly Cocktail of unusual smells from pieces of plant in our herb garden.

(Alternative sensory activities are available and can be discussed to suit your requirements.)

Art in the Park!
(half day or full day)

Enjoy a full or half day of activities to use art skills in an outdoor setting. Why not combine Art in the Park with a Sensory Walk, so that your class can be inspired by experiencing Gatton Park through all their senses.

Take a walk through the beautiful grounds and open countryside of Gatton Park to get your artistic imagination flowing and use a variety of materials to create artworks. The activities include:

  • Collecting nature's colours on an artist's palette.
  • Using our Japanese Garden as inspiration, children use found items to design and create their own miniature Japanese Gardens.
  • Make a giant Minibeast sculpture from found natural objects.
